Get to Know Eating Disorder Therapist and Alsana Clinical Director Dr. Moreen Rubin

Happy New Year everyone! It’s so exciting that we are in a BRAND NEW DECADE! It’s time for new beginnings and amazing growth. There are going to be some wonderful things to come for my eating disorder blog in 2020, and I can’t wait to share them with you! For today’s post, I’ve interviewed eating disorder psychologist Dr. Moreen Rubin, LMFT, who is the Senior Director of Clinical Services at Alsana eating disorder treatment centers. at I’ve recently gotten to know more about Alsana, especially the Westlake location, which isn’t too far from San Diego. I’ve been really impressed with their innovative approach to eating disorder treatment, which incorporates spirituality—and I love love love that! Enjoy reading more about it.

Why did you choose to become an eating disorder specialist at Alsana?

I love our treatment philosophy. Alsana's adaptive care model features five key categories that, when in balance allow the person to live their best life. These key categories  are medical, psychological, nutritional, relational, movement. The foundation of our treatment program is based on enhancing each one of these areas for our clients, as it makes sense for them. The program is super individualized, and I love seeing our clients thrive.

What kind of treatment do you provide?

We provide medical and psychiatric stabilization, nutritional rehabilitation, individual and group psychotherapy and family therapy.

Do you work with only eating disorders?

We primarily treat eating disorders, but many of our clients also have other co-occurring disorders such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, ect.

How long have you been working with eating disorders overall, and how long have you been at Alsana?

I have been working with eating disorders since 2008, and I have been at Alsana for about a year and a half.

What levels of care does Alsana offer in Southern California?

Alsana offers residential, partial hospitalization programming, and intensive outpatient.

What happens when people first reach out to Alsana?

The speak with one of our super-fabulous admissions counselors and do a phone assessment to determine which level of care they might need.

Alsana has a unique approach to eating disorder treatment: the adaptive care model. Would you share a little bit about the model and how it is helpful for people in eating disorder recovery?

Many program focus on three areas of treatment: nutritional  restoration, medical  stabilization, and psychological stabilization. Alsana's model has those items but has added two more so that we can help a person reach balance with their spiritual self and rehabilitate their relationship with movement.

What do you wish people knew about getting treatment for eating disorders?

Living with an eating disorder can be a lonely experience. Coming to treatment allows you to meet others whose stories and experiences are similar to yours, and creating a judgement-free and very compassionate environment. It's so healing to come out of isolation and into warmth and understanding.

How can people learn more and contact Alsana?

Call our admissions office or contact our Outreach Director, Quemille Benitez (Quemille.benitez@alsana.com).

Share one fun fact about you that most people don’t know.

I love reading, dancing, and posting inspirational posts on my instagram page @dr.moreenrubin
