Three Steps to Start Your Eating Disorder Recovery in 2024

Dealing with an eating disorder in San Diego and beyond in 2024 is so challenging. The last two years have been especially difficult for San Diego, California, and Texas adults and teens grappling with binge eating, night eating, restrictive eating, compulsive exercising, and picky eating, as well as anorexia and bulimia.

You are tired of the long waitlists and unanswered calls

There’s something about the stressors out there that have pushed people past their limits. You may have called numerous San Diego eating disorder therapists and multiple San Diego eating disorder treatment programs. They all have weeks-long waiting lists or may even not treat your particular type of eating disorder. It’s so hard to know where to turn.

As an eating disorder coach in San Diego, I have outlined three steps to get you started on your pathway to recovery, waiting list or not. By following these steps you are getting closer to your own eating disorder recovery.

STEP #1: Get an assessment

Assessments can come in three forms: medical, psychological, and nutritional. I suggest that you first see your primary care physician so they can check your vital signs, get bloodwork, etc. One issue is that most medical practitioners do not have much knowledge and experience with eating disorders. If that is the case, I recommend that you contact an eating disorder specialist, physician, or at least a medical practitioner who has some eating disorder experience.

Who can you contact for support with eating disorder recovery?

For treating eating disorders in San Diego, I suggest you contact Dr. Christine Wood (if you are 19 years old and younger), Jane Hadinger, NP, or Dr Jennifer Gaudiani. The Gaudiani Clinic is located in Denver and she is licensed to practice in California and other states, so you can work with her virtually if you have an eating disorder living in San Diego.

What are my next steps for psychological and nutritional assessments?

For psychological assessments, reach out to an eating disorder therapist. Schedule an initial consultation with them (I do a free, 15-minute phone consultation), and they can give you a sense of which level of eating disorder treatment you might need.

For nutritional assessments, call an eating disorder dietitian. You can again schedule a short phone call with them to share with them your struggles and determine whether they can help you with your eating disorder.

STEP #2: Know your options for support

There are many levels of eating disorder treatment in San Diego and in the rest of the U.S. The levels range from least time-and-energy intensive to most intensive: outpatient therapy/treatment, intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), partial hospital program (PHP), residential, and hospitalization. In San Diego, there are a lot of eating disorder therapists and eating disorder dietitians, as well as IOP, PHP, and residential programs. Calling them and talking with either the provider or the admissions counselors will give you more information about whether they would be the best fit for your eating disorder treatment in San Diego.

STEP #3: Access resources for your eating disorder recovery

There are a lot of free or low-cost resources out there that you can access while you are determining which level of San Diego eating disorder treatment fits you best. Check out my blog for 6 online resources for eating disorders. Additionally, there are social media options, as well as excellent books on eating disorder recovery that you can read.

Low-Cost Options and Groups

I’d also check out any free or low-cost virtual and in-person eating disorder support groups in San Diego County. ANAD (National Association for Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders) has San Diego groups that are therapist-led. Center for Discovery, which has eating disorder IOP/PHP/residential treatment programs, provides free groups as well.

Some of these groups cater to specific populations, such as teens and LGBTQ+ individuals. I strongly recommend that you attend a group led by an eating disorder therapist so you can get the best care. I would try a couple of eating disorder support groups to find one that best fits you.

I offer multiple avenues for support, begin working with a binge-eating recovery coach soon!

Following these three steps will get you on the path to eating disorder recovery. It will take time and effort, and it will be the best gift you can give yourself in 2023 and beyond!
