Binge eating recovery is a cause for celebration in so many ways. Whether you live in New York, Florida, California, or Colorado, it’s important to highlight small and big victories. What this means is that you focus on recovery achievements that have nothing to do with the scale. Here are 5 types of non-scale victories that you can celebrate as you recover from binge eating in NYC, San Diego, and London UK.

5 Non-Scale Victories To Celebrate

Victory #1: You Begin Eating Regularly

Eating regularly, also known as mechanical eating, is the #1 thing that I look for in the early stages of binge eating recovery. It means eating breakfast within 1 hour of waking. It also means eating 3 meals and 2-3 snacks. It’s basically eating every 3 hours throughout the day. It keeps up your blood sugar levels, helps you curate a “fit” metabolism, and reboots your digestive system so it eventually works more effectively.

Victory #2: Binge-Eating Episodes Decrease in Frequency and Amount

Another marker I look for in the early stages of recovery is a decrease in the frequency of binge eating episodes and a decrease in the amount of food consumed during each binge. It indicates that you are better able to manage your emotions and your life without binge eating. It also feels less stressful on your digestive system. It’s important to remember, however, that recovery isn’t linear. You may have one week of reduced binge eating episodes, and then go back up again. Remember that overall things are improving, and that’s what counts.

Victory #3: You Feel Less Anxious About Food Decisions

When clients first come to see me, they often feel incredibly anxious, almost paralyzed, when they have to make decisions about what to eat. Their minds are racing about whether foods are healthy/unhealthy, good/bad, clean/junk. Binge eating recovery means that (a) you aren’t having as many polarized thoughts about food, and (b) you begin to feel more confident about your ability to choose food for yourself. All this comes from education, support, and time.

Victory #4: You Obsess Less About Food, Eating, and Body Image

Sometimes people think binge eating behaviors are the only markers for a binge eating disorder diagnosis. A HUGE characteristic is when you’re thinking about eating, food, and body image 80-90% of the time. A significant indicator of recovery is when that percentage decreases.

At the beginning of my work with clients, I tell them that they can reduce such obsessive thoughts from 80-90% of the time to less than 10% of the time. They look at me like I’m crazy. Then after time goes by, and they have lots of binge eating recovery under their belts, they begin to believe that it’s true. Because it is, and you’ll get there.

Victory #5: You Stop Binge Eating Completely

I cannot tell you how amazing it felt when I was in the latter stages of my recovery from a binge eating disorder while living in San Diego, California. One day I realized that I couldn’t remember the last time I binged. It was mind-blowing. 🤯

Full recovery from binge eating is possible. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it. Just keep moving forward in recovery every day, and you’ll get there.
