Restricting is a Part of the Binge Eating Cycle: Meet The Binge Dietitian Toni Rudd, HCPC

Wait, WHAT? How the heck can restricting be a part of the binge eating cycle? Surprise surprise, it totally can. I know it may not feel like it, especially when you’re mid-binge, but binge eating specialists in California and elsewhere know that if you’re struggling with binging, it means you are restricting. The Binge Dietitian Toni Rudd, HCPC, agrees. I met Toni a few months ago, and we have so much in common in how we treat binge eating that I could not WAIT to interview her for my blog. Toni is a UK (United Kingdom) Registered Dietitian and is totally weight-inclusive and non-diet. She specializes in binge eating, and she rocks on Instagram @the.binge.dietitian.

Why did you choose to become an eating disorder specialist?

One of my main reasons I have chosen to work as a weight-inclusive and non-diet dietitian is my own experience growing up in diet culture as a young aspiring dancer in my teens and as a women. As a child I remember growing up in a world where my mum and nan (grandma) struggled with their bodies. My mum was a well-known slimming (dieting) group coach. As a child, I went to her meetings with her after school, maybe like 2-3 times a week. She was very good at her job, and she was very hard working and inspiring. After she stopped working and "counting points," she put on all the weight she had lost. Having being exposed to this as a child really led me to where I am today. Also, when I was working in the UK's National Health Service (NHS), I saw how confused everyone was about dieting messages, and I enjoyed encouraging people to eat the food they enjoy with individualized advice to suit their needs. Food and nutrition is really personal, and I love that about being a dietitian.

What kind of treatment do you provide?

I provide a weight-inclusive, non-diet approach to those who have binge eating disorder or who are stuck in the restrict-binge eating cycle. I want to help people feel less stress and guilt around what they are eating so they can have a better relationship with food. I have a 5-step program called Beyond Binging, which helps people achieve binge freedom and gain more control around food. It includes personalized coaching and support for up for 6 months. Alternatively, I offer weekly or biweekly consultations in my nutrition support clinic.

Do you work with only binge eating disorders?

I focus on those with binge eating disorder or binge eating behaviors, but I love working with anyone who wants ditch dieting and restriction.

Where are you located?

I live in Lima, Peru, but I work online with clients around the world

How long have you been working with eating disorders overall?

I have been working with eating disorders for the last 5 years. I’ve gone from acute mental health work as a registered dietitian in the NHS in the UK to now having my own private practice.

What happens during a first appointment with you?

In my initial consultation, I get know my client and their goals. I like to understand the bigger story around their eating and then see where they are today. It’s also helpful to have an understanding about what they have tried in terms of diets and eating so I can understand what worked and what didn't work.

What are the first steps you take when treating binge eating?

I follow intuitive eating strategies and initially, I focus on ending restriction and redefining health. I love sharing evidence knowledge around the affects of weight cycling / yo-yo dieting. I think share this information is very powerful in helping someone to stop dieting.

What do you wish people knew about getting treatment for binge eating disorder?

I wish people knew that that anyone, any size can have binge eating disorder. You cannot tell by the way someone looks that they do or do not have binge eating disorder. Also I wish they knew that binge eating recovery is possible but it is not linear. You will continue to binge eat at times, but it’s about learning how to reflect upon the binge episodes and determine why it happened so you can put coping strategies into place next time.

How can people learn more about and contact you?

My main platform is Instagram, so feel free to message me there. Other places you can find me is my website or my email address if you have any questions on how I could support you.

Share one fun fact about you that most people don't know.

I love grim/rap music, I find it very empowering!
