Meet “The Eating Disorder Therapist Podcast” Host: UK Clinician, Harriet Frew, MSc

Need eating disorder support? An EXCELLENT resource is The Eating Disorder Therapist Podcast. Helmed by Cambridge, UK psychotherapist Harriet Frew, MSc, this podcast covers all things eating disorders, for people in recovery and professionals alike. Harriet is an amazing UK eating disorder clinician in her own right. Her passion for helping people recovery will inspire you!

Why did you choose to become an eating disorder specialist?

I had personal experience of bulimia nervosa in my late teens and early twenties; initially, I was very much a “wounded healer,” wanting to support others, after finding support options to be limited in the UK. I felt extremely passionate about working in this field and began training at 24 years old (I have a Diploma Eating Disorders and a MSc in Nutrition). I have never looked back and remain truly inspired and dedicated to 1:1 therapy, training professionals, podcasting, and educating around eating disorders.

What kind of treatment do you provide?

Psychological therapy - I use an integrative approach, managing symptoms and working on the deeper issues together.

Do you work with only eating disorders?

Yes.

Where are you located? In which states do you practice?

I'm based near Cambridge in the UK, and all my work is online on Zoom.

How long have you been working with eating disorders overall?

19 years!!

What are your favorite types of clients to work with?

Bulimia and binge eating.

What happens during a first appointment with you?

You will have a discovery call with me to understand your history. We will discuss previous therapy and current symptoms. We explore whether we are a good fit to work together. Ultimately, I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship as the primary healer, so it is essential that there is trust, empathy, warmth, and connection between us.

What are the first steps you take when treating binge eating and/or bulimia?

Understanding your story and working on motivation and ambivalence around change.

What's the name of your podcast and how did you decide to launch it?

The Eating Disorder Therapist. I decided to launch it in Feb 2020 (just before the first lockdown) on a whim. I didn't have a grand plan and had no idea about what I was doing! The guests truly make the podcast, and I genuinely feel that I am a channel for this wonderful way to communicate inspiring recovery messages. I simply ask the questions and provide the platform.

What eating disorder issues do you cover in your podcast that people would find helpful?

  • Recovery stories from people who have struggled with different eating disorders.

  • The psychology of eating disorders and understanding eating disorders as coping strategies.

  • Different types of eating disorders.

  • Skills and strategies to support you in overcoming an eating disorder.

These skills and strategies include understanding your story, body image, binge eating, restrictive eating, managing emotions, cognitive behavior therapy, faulty thinking, relapse, self-esteem, finding your voice, relationships and eating disorders, support for caregivers, as well as regular interviews with professionals working with eating disorder clients.

What do you wish people knew about getting treatment for eating disorders?

True healing is a journey to freedom - not just with food but stepping into an authentic and wholehearted version of yourself.
